Abstract: Weather authorities around the world have raised an El Niño ‘red flag’ in recent weeks, sparking concerns in some regions and bringing hope to others. The potential emergence of an El Niño pattern in 2H 2009 will threaten wheat production in Australia, palm oil, cocoa and coffee production in Southeast Asia and cocoa production in west Africa, while potentially benefitting wheat and soybean production in Argentina.
