Abstract: In January of 2006, storm clouds began to form over the United States’ (U.S.) rice sector after traces of genetically modified (GM) rice turned up in a shipment destined for the European Union (EU), a pattern which would be repeated over the following months. By the end of 2006, the EU had effectively halted imports of U.S. rice. Total U.S. rice exports fell almost 20 percent, raising concern over the viability of the sector.
