Abstract: Cow-calf producers in the United States (U.S.) enjoyed an unprecedented string of profitable years, from 1997 to 2007.What made this prosperity even more surprising is that it was achieved despite significant market disruptions due to bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE), growing supplies of competing meats (chicken and pork),new competition in export markets, upward spiraling input costs and lackluster financial performances from both the feedlot and packer segments.
