Abstract: The Brazilian states of Maranhão (MA), Tocantins (TO), and Piauí (PI) form an agricultural region known as MATOPI, which is probably the last agricultural frontier in Brazil. Its rapid growth is in no small measure due to its favorable attributes for agriculture and relatively low land cost.
