Abstract: Having survived a difficult 2005/06 crop year (CY),the United States’(U.S.) sugar sector continues to face an array of challenges in the period ahead. The effect of high soil moisture on the beet crop, combined with the hurricane damage to the sugarcane crop and refining facilities, led to a reduction in supply in a market which was already tight, and caused a strong increase in refined sugar prices.
