Abstract: Since September 2003, freight costs have been increasing at an accelerated pace. By mid November 2003, they were already 80% higher than September’s levels.

For relatively low-priced commodities, this increase can affect the delivered prices significantly. For instance, for shipments of corn traveling from the US gulf to South Asia, freight costs can represent more than 40% of the final price paid by the importer.
