Abstract: At the start of 2003, a mandatory deposit, the 'Zwangspfand', was introduced in Germany. It applies to all CO2 beverages in cans and plastic bottles. These include beer, carbonated soft drinks, beer pre-mixes, energy drinks and sparkling mineral water, but not fruit juices, spirits and any pre-mixes including spirits or wine. This system is a consequence of a German recycling law that came into effect in 1991.
