Abstract: Forest products are New Zealand's third largest export industry, behind dairy and meat, contributing NZD3.5 billion in export value in 2002/03. The relatively high NZD and high freight rates in the past year have reduced returns in the export focused forestry sector. The New Zealand forestry industry faces a number of ongoing challenges, with steady growth in production over the coming decade, and strong competition in the critical export log and structural timber markets.
