Abstract: Identity preservation (IP) has been cited as the key in opening the door to trading in commodities that can be produced from conventional or genetically modified varieties (GM) of plants at the same location. IP has practical limitations in terms of direct and indirect costs, lost time and logistical inefficiency because of the difficulty in achieving economies of scale. While consumers are driving the push for IP, they appear less willing to pay for it with their food dollar.
