Abstract: Tilapia originated in Africa and has been farmed in the Nile Delta for thousands of years. Tradition has it that the miraculous fish Jesus used to feed the five thousand were Tilapia. Centuries ago the fish spread to Asia where it became an important animal protein input. In other words, the species itself is anything but new as a source of nourishment.
