Abstract: 1 May 2004 will mark a milestone in the history of the European Union. On that date, the number of member states will rise from 15 to 25; the population of the EU will increase by 19% to a total of 455 million; national economies social and political environments as well as governmental organisations will change; production, consumption and trade flows will be affected; the competitive environment for many companies will change; and the EU's position in the world economy will be strengthened.
