Abstract: Apples account for 13 percent of global fruit production, making it the fourth most widely produced fruit in the world. Worldwide acreage for the popular tree fruit has increased roughly 50 percent since 1970, covering about 5.3 million hectares (13 million acres) today. At the same time, production has risen 55 percent from 27 million tones in 1970 to over 59 million tones in 2004, indicating that on the whole, orchard yields have also increased.
