Abstract: Wheat is currently the world’s most consumed food grain, with global consumption at approximately 494 million tonnes per year. Its use is more than twice that of corn for direct food purposes, and 17 percent more than global rice consumption. In terms of volume produced, wheat was the number one grain until it was surpassed by corn in 1998. However, wheat still accounts for the largest area of cultivated land worldwide.
